Review by: James,On 11 Dec 2000
This is where things start getting REALLY interesting.
The Twickenham stuff has mostly been done to death - maybe
Vigotone should have let it be and concentrated solely on
the Apple sessions - there could have been even MORE
wonderful rare stuff than there already is.

James, I do suppose that things do really do get interesting somewhere in this monolithic compilation: Apple Sessions getting started, Twichenham sessions ended, but it's not on this disc, unless you consider hearing "Dig A Pony" repeated over and over as interesting. The same half hazard jam session continues with the constant wash of George's wah wah guitar. The worst device ever invented for musicians to toy with, other than Peter Framptons vocal device. "Don't Let Me Down" was one of John's strongest pieces in the latter stages of the Beatles, but the versions offered up here on this disc, are cumbersome and half baked. There are better versions of this song elsewhere, the new "Get Back" release for instance. If anything, this 17 set collection reveals one thing, that being, the Beatles were very unhappy campers at this stage of their career. The performances are sloppy, comping along guitars, drone drumming, forgetful attempts at lyrics, and pretty bad sound. Only the strong willed Beatles collector will appreciate this morbid collection.

Track 28 has a Jan. 22nd version code, but Billy Preston plays on Track 28, and he didn't join up until Jan. 23rd.

I guess they told Glyn to lay off, because he should have been beating them into shape. It's really hard to make a serious record while casually hanging out in the studio. This set of half-hearted takes proves it.
