Reviews

Review by: Gary, gbeegle@frontiernet.netOn 16 Aug 2000
First let me say that the sound on this three CD set is wonderful, really clean sounding stuff. This is a 3 CD set of songs from John's Mind Games sessions.I am going to review each CD indivually.First CD #1 which is the Alternate Mind Games album and also it contains the sessions for the song "Rock n' Roll people".That is the song John gave to Johnny Winter. An official Lennon release of "Rock n' Roll people" didn't appear until Menlove Ave. was released. It is wonderful to all these session recordings of "Rock n' Roll people",and in fact on CD #3 of this set we also have the demo version for "Rock n' Roll people",however we will get to that later. The alternate album is great.Mind games was an album where John produced some of his most beautiful love songs to Yoko. This Cd has some very nice versions of those songs."I Know","one day at a time" and "out the Blue" have very nice versions on this CD.I always felt "out the Blue" was one of John's more poetic love songs, with the lines.!..."out the blue you came to me/and blue away lifes misery".It is pure Lennon poetry,no bullshit.John always said "cut through the bullshit and say it as simple as you can".In the song "out the Blue" he did just that, and this is a beautiful version.Having said that, doesn't mean there aren't songs that rock out on this disk. The version of "meat City" which appears here really rocks,as do the above mentioned versions of "Rock n' Roll people".The thing about John,is he could move you with just his voice and guitar or piano or he could also really rock out with the best of them.He does both on this CD set.Because a few of the songs on this disk are not too different from the commercial versions,I am giving this first CD form the set an 8.It is a good one,as is this whole set.If you can find one, grab it when you see it.You will not be sorry.

Absolutely Fabulous !

The sound of this CD is quite good. In fact, until the Remastered Mind Games was released, in some ways this was a better disc than the old Mind Games was. It has a better "feel" and more bass presence. I find myself not listening to it much now that the Remastered Mind games has an excellent sound to it. The disc does show you many of the songs without the female choir voices that I've never liked. The gem is probably the song Mind Games itself, which gives you a glimpse of all the work that went into making the backing track. Meat City is also quite interesting as it removes some of the sound effects.
