Norman Gunston is the persona created by Gary Macdonald, who first appeared on Australian TV's "Aunty Jack Show" in 1974. In a spin-off from that series, the Gunston character was given this chat show.

The basic premise is that he is a graceless, style-less, talentless, egotistical showbiz type, with a comb-over and perpetual shaving cuts poorly masked by bits of toilet paper stuck over them to stop the bleeding, which, he assures his guests, cannot be seen by the cameras. His gormless questioning and appearance completely nonplus his interviewees with sometimes hilarious results. And he manages to interview some very big names...

Paul McCartney is visibly emabarrassed, but amused, though he sees through it all - perhaps the most genuine you'll see him, without the usual diplomatic glibness he usually projects.

Frank Zappa is ironic but still cracks up when told that Norman doesn't play an electric harmonica any more because of the lint build-up on his lips.

Keith Moon abuses him outside a concert, simply for being Australian, and tips vodka over him. John Entwhistle is sympathetic.

More enjoyable than his 1990s comeback, this DVD has some very funny moments.
