Review by: Chris Johnson, moptop@altavista.netOn 8 Jun 1999
What you'd expect from Home Demo's , some nice material, worth looking out.

"Hi" speaks for itself."Grow Old With Me" and "Now And Then" are the Rumoured tracks for the up and coming Beatles project."Grow Old With Me" was once John's best known unfinished work due to it's inclusion on the "Milk And Honey" album, this version shows the stark piano and Rhythm Ace recording prior to being mixed before release. You can actually hear both parts of John's double track vocal. "Now And Then" is the elusive third Beatles track, which was never completed during the spring sessions of 1995.It is introduced here in it's original form, complete with "that" buzz which plagued co-producer Jeff Lynne. On listening it is revealed that John slips into "She's A Friend Of Dorothy's" during the instrumental break.

The version of "Real Love" selected for this compilation is an early Beatles Mix destined for the waste bin, but in many opinions is better than the released version. "I'm The Greatest" is a different mix from the one on "Ringo", John and George help out, of course. This is followed by an acetate of "Let It Be" which was found at a "Boot Fair", notice the difference in the mix during the guitar break which runs closely to the single version. "Cookin' In The Kitchen Of Love" is John's demo of a song given to Ringo for his "Rotogravure" album. A slice of history next, "I Need Your Lovin'". Everyday was part of a live broadcast on rediffusion's popular television show,"Ready Steady Go".On Good Friday, the 16th of April 1965, John and George were at Studio 1,Wembley studios in London talking to Cathy McGowan, to promote the Beatles new single,"Ticket To Ride". Also appearing on the show were Adam Faith, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, Doris Troy, and Herman's Hermits. At the finish of the programme John and George joined everyone else for a "Jam" session.John, George, Adam and Doris sang.

"Honey Don't","Matchbox" and "Don't Be Cruel" (featuring John's mock Elvis impersonation) were recorded during the making of the "Plastic Ono Band" Album. The band were :John Lennon - Vox and Guitar, Ringo Starr - Drums, Klaus Voorman - Bass, Yoko Ono - Wind. The first half finishes with "6 O'Clock" which was written by Paul and Linda for the Ringo" album. this is the extended version, very nice.

"India" was a track that was left of the "The Lost Lennon Tapes" radio series, it features a set of lyrics over a polished guitar backing, the melody blends and upbeat version of "Tennessee" with the chorus of "Serve Yourself". Another song overlooked by the radio series was "Illusions" (also known as "Not For Love Or Money") a close milked acoustic guitar demo reminiscent of "Serve Yourself " and "I'm Stepping Out". Recorded at the Dakota Country and Western Club on acoustic Guitar and Rhythm Ace, "Life Begins At 40" was a demo given to Ringo when he met John at The Plaza Hotel in Late November 1980 for inclusion on what was to become "Stop And Smell The Roses"."You Saved My Soul" was probably John's Last home recording to surface.Taken from a tape dated November 14th 1980, this electric guitar based demo is an excerpt of a longer "Stream Of Consciousness" composing sequence which, among the many false starts, also includes the well known "Serve Yourself " and interrupting vocalization "Pop Is The Game".

"Help Me To Help Myself" is an original piano based home demo, presented in a gospel style. It was recorded prior to the Dylaneque guitar/drum machine demo also heard on "The Lost Lennon Tapes". "One Of The Boys" is another unreleased original committed to tape shortly after John and Yoko returned from their Japanese holiday toward the end of 1977. Recorded at the Dakota, two takes have surfaced , both with a spirited acoustic guitar accompaniment. The last of these known takes is added to this compilation. The slight familiar melody and lyrics which appear toward the end of take 2 belong to a tune titled "Caribbean" popularised nearly 20 years earlier by Mitchell Torok and also revisited by the Plastic Ono Elephants Memory Band during their 1972 Record Plant Breakfast Jam. Taken from teh same cassette as "Free As A Bird","What Ever Happened To..."was another several tracks composed for the unrealised "The Ballard Of John And Yoko". John punctuates his vocal with a staccato acoustic guitar on this demo which dates from 1977. Part of a lenghty composing sequence, "Baby Make Love To You" offers the fascinating experience of hearing John discover the chord progression which would eventually develop into the verse of "Real Love"."That's The Way The World Is" combines elements of which would eventually unravel into two distinctly different styled songs."Real Love" and "I'm Stepping Out".A Dakota piano demo with single tracked vocal, it appears here with a considerably longer intro than it's broadcast counterpart. "Across The River" appeared previously on "The Lost Lennon Tapes" as part of what has become known as the J9 Medley. The take appearing here was never aired as part of the radio series, and features John accompanied by acoustic guitar and Rhythm Ace. Dating from early November, 1980, "Dear John" is one of the last known Lennon compositions to materialise. With trademark introspectives lyrics still unfinished , John backs himself rigidly on a coustic guitar, yet urges himself to relax. John's vocal registers his embarrassment at being caught nicking a melody for the chorus - "September Song". And so we finish with "Free As A Bird", the full length version with the doves wings flapping, as in the video, the clapping outtro and the backward message reversed.

Turned Out Nice Again....

In my opinion, the Real Love that appears here must be the clipped version handed over to the video producers as a reference prior to the songs release. Godley and Creme had to add their own "vocals" to it because the hyper-paranoid Beatles had intentionally muted them! This incident was well documented in interviews with the producers around the Anthology release.

More of a John Lennon disc really...

One Paul McCartney solo song, an excerpt from one of his regular tracks; two Ringo Starr songs, one written by John; nothing by George. Two reunion tracks. A Beatles remix, and a curio from 1965. The rest are all John Lennon.

Nowhere is John to be seen on the cover (even Yoko is on the back!)...If it were legal, it would be banned under fair trading laws!

All the same, it's a very enjoyable album. The reunion tracks sound good, and the other tracks are more than listenable.

The Beatles in the 90's? Sorry, no. Thanks, Clįudio Teran...
