Comments Spring (or American Spring in the UK) consisted of Brian's wife Marilyn, her sister and friend. This release contains their sole LP in it's entirety, plus bonus tracks. Almost all the tracks were written and produced by Brian Wilson in the early 70's - Fallin' in Love (AKA "Lady" by Dennis Wilson) is sublime. This is an official release that is long out of print, and now goes for large sums on eBay.

ReviewsReview by: The Hitmaker | On 25 Jun 2005 at 14:49 CET | | oh sweet little music for the masters wife and her sister. the best springtrack you will miss: snowflakes! you can find it at "the beach boys - get the boot vol. 2" |
Review by: ringoswig | On 29 Dec 2006 at 07:05 CET | | I came at this with an open mind not being a huge Beach Boys fan and certainly not knowing a thing about American Spring. Have to say I was quite disappointed. Very cabaret sounding and has the worst drums I've heard on a record in a long time. Tennesee Waltz is ok and This Whole World is passable despite the bizarre ending and godawful guitar solo. I get the feeling that Marilyn Wilson and co were going through the motions. Very vanilla Carpenters sounding cast offs that would probably fit well on an Austin Powers soundtrack. I'm expecting some heat for this but it's just my humble opinion. |
Review by: dumangl | On 01 Feb 2007 at 00:15 CET | | Spring...plus is incredible! "Awake", "Sweet Mountain", "Forever", "Down Home", "Shyin' Away". "Fallin' In Love" and "It's Like Heaven" are all masterpieces.
Tracks 1-12 are from the 1972 "Spring" LP (United Artists BUAS-5571) Tracks 13-14 are from the April 1974 Columbia (4-45834) single "Shyin' Away" B-side "Fallin' In Love" Tracks 15-16 are from a Fan Club only LP (pressed in pink vinyl!) titled "It's Like Heaven" in 1986.
Although Brian Wilson is credited for the production of Spring, he actually had little direct involvement with the album and was absent from the studio in Fairfield IA where much of the production took place. Some production credit should probably go to all of the following (in no particular order): Steve Desper David Sandler Diane Rovell Marilyn Wilson Richard Henn Brian Wilson Jack Reilly
Interesting quote from Steve Desper: "Most of the tracks on Spring were annexed from unused or discarded tracking dates that were done by The Beach Boys. Brian had very little to do with the production of Spring. It was mostly the girls and myself, quite frankly." http://www.smileysmile.net/desperblog/index.php/2005/
Track Notes:
1. Tennessee Waltz [P. W. King/R. Stewart] <2:04> Marilyn Wilson lead vocal.
2. Thinkin' Bout You Baby [B. Wilson/M. Love] <3:25> Written originally for Sharon Marie, in the early 60s, then rewritten as “Darlin'” for Wild Honey. Marilyn lead vocal, Diane Wilson & Brian Wilson backing vocals.
3. Mama Said [W. Denson] <2:34> Marilyn lead vocal.
4. Superstar [L. Russel/B. Bramlett] <3:31> A hit for The Carpenters. Marilyn lead vocal.
5. Awake [F. Tucker] <3:24> Marilyn lead vocal.
6. Sweet Mountain [B. Wilson/D. Sandler] <4:13> Recorded nowhere else. Inspired by Mountain Of Love, but far better. Synthesised backing track. Diane lead vocal. The uncredited male backing vocal at the end (It rained on the mountain/sweet mountain of love) may be Brian or Jack Reilly.
7. Everybody [T. Roe] <2:20> Diane lead vocal. Marilyn & Brian backing vocals.
8. This Whole World [B. Wilson] <3:11> From the Beach Boys “Sunflower” album, with added new lyrics and a wierd tag based on “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. Marilyn lead vocal, Diane and David Sandler backing vocals.
9. Forever [D. Wilson/G. Jakobson] <3:15> From the Beach Boys “Sunflower” album. Marilyn lead vocal, Diane and Carl Wilson backing vocals.
10. Good Time [B. Wilson/A. Jardine] <2:48> Recorded by The Beach Boys for “Landlocked” in 1970, but not released until 1977 on “Love You”. This version uses the instrumental track and backing vocals from The Beach Boys version, with Marilyn on lead vocal. Lyrics are changed for a girl part, ruining the delightfully idiotic original lyrics.
11. Now That Everything's Been Said [C. King] <2:14> Diane lead vocal, Marilyn & David Sandler backing vocals.
12. Down Home [C. King/G. Goffin] <2:42> Marilyn lead vocal, Diane backing vocal, Jack Rieley vocals on tag only.
13. Shyin' Away [Marilyn Wilson/D. Rovell/D. Sandler] <2:52> Bonus track from the April 1974 Columbia (4-45834) single "Shyin' Away" B-side "Fallin' In Love". Marilyn lead vocal.
14. Fallin' In Love [D. Wilson] <2:35> Bonus track from the April 1974 Columbia (4-45834) single "Shyin' Away" B-side "Fallin' In Love". A remake of Dennis Wilson's “Lady” (with 'baby' substituted for 'lady'). “Lady” has never been officially released in the US. Both versions of the song are beautiful. Diane lead vocal.
15. It's Like Heaven [B. Wilson/D. Rovell] <2:34> Bonus track, written in 1973 but not released until 1986 on an authorized Fan Club only LP (pressed in pink vinyl) titled "It's Like Heaven". Lead vocals split between Diane, Marilyn, and sister Barbara Rovell Gaddy.
16. Had To Phone Ya [B. Wilson/D. Rovell] <2:03> Bonus track, written in 1973 but not released until 1986 on an authorized Fan Club only LP (pressed in pink vinyl) titled "It's Like Heaven". Song credits were changed to [B. Wilson/M. Love] when this song was slightly redone by the Beach Boys for “15 Big Ones” with somewhat different lyrics. Mike is quite a songwriter, just ask his attorneys. Marilyn lead vocal.
ringoswig - I don't believe Marilyn and Diane were just going through the motions. The plain truth is that neither of the girls has a great voice (and they're missing their best singer, Ginger), but great songs often comes from artists without great voices.

Review by: 49ersphil | On 28 Mar 2007 at 19:52 CET | | One or two slightly dull tracks but well worth it for the terrific Thinking 'Bout You Baby (which became Darlin') Forever, Shyin' Away and Fallin' In Love.
Any Beach Boys fan MUST get this if possible. |
