Who?

The Hype are best considered as part of the Stone Roses story. The early version of the Roses had five members - Andy Couzens, rhythm guitarist, co-wrote most of the early stuff, but left in the mid-80's. Couzens went on to form the High, along with a pre-Roses drummer Chris Goodwin, John Matthews on vocals and Simon Davies on bass.

They were strictly second division in the Madchester scene, but did have a minor hit with Box Set Go and released and album, Somewhere Soon.

This was recorded at Liverpool Polytechnic (now John Moores University) on 22nd October 1990. It's a pretty good audience recording, somewhat marred by absolutely excruciatingly bad vocals - so far out of tune that Ian Brown would be very very jealous.

We saw the band in Nottingham on 12th December that year. By this time their support had dwindled so much that it had to be moved from the Poly's main hall to the Junior Common Room - there were about two dozen of us, toe to toe with the band!
