Who could have imagined when The Beatles struck out on their now-legendary trip to Germany and Barry Gordy headed away from the assembly line down his own history-making direction that events would conspire for those paths to cross ?The day would comoe when the music of Motown would do battle for the top of the charts with the boys from Liverpool. Both would step up to claim considerable shares in the shaping of pop music history. As almost all British groups early on the Beatles remade many American music-makers hits.Three Motwon´s hits covered by John, Paul, George and Ringo were the Marvelettes´Please Mr. Postman,Barret Strong´s Money( That´s what I want ) and The Miracles´You´ve Really Got A Hold On Me. Motown had such an amazing number of prolific writers, there was seldom a thought to look outside for material. But so all-sweeping was the impact of The Beatles that Berry set his list of hitmakers to cover The Beatles´charttoppers. The songs were virtually re invented at the hands of some of these artists. Yesterday from Marvin Gaye became ethereal far from the somber reflections of others who have recorded the song. From the diaphanous soprano of Diana Ross to the soaring sensuous growl of Levi Stubbs, from the trademark runs of Gladys Knight these pop masterpieces are sizzling with home-grown American soul as Motown Meets The Beatles.
